Project | 01 Virtual Reality for Distributed Workforces
Virtual reality (VR) has been a tool for communication and research for several decades. However, until now, it was generally not practical to experience collaborative VR tools immersively without a heavy investment into a highly technical infrastructure. For the majority of users, remote meeting tools have been limited to simple webcams and 2D desktop displays, with minor implications for how included remote team members may or may not feel. Often times, these tools leave virtual participants feeling left out of collaborative efforts. The rise of inexpensive commercial immersive VR technology means a revolution in for distributed workforces meeting remotely.

Project | 02 Virtual Site Visits
Immersive virtual reality (iVR) technologies are changing the way people communicate information about place and space, comparable to the invention of the printing press. The availability of affordable head mounted displays (e.g., $2.50 for a Google Cardboard) and a booming market for content-creation tools such as 360-degree cameras and environmental sensors such as LiDAR create vast opportunities for field experiences that could not have been part of online learning environments before. iVR offers students content which allows them to personally experience remote locations in both space and time or even unreachable places (e.g., inside of a volcano).

Project | 03 Multi-Modal Interface for Presentations
Development and testing in human factors and ergonomics for design student presentations in a large 3-screen multi-modal environment. Communicating design in presentations often involves pin-ups and methods that aim to mix both traditional materials with digital. We developed and then tested the use of a digital presentation environment for a large 3-screen space. The presentation environment allowed for flexibility in presenting multiple formats of design information, including video, virtual walkthroughs, photos, and pdfs, through a scalable drag-n-drop interface created with JQuery and JavaScript.

Project | 04 Measuring the Added Value of Interactivity and Immersion to Decision-Support Tools
The role of instantaneous feedback and immersive capabilities for decision-making under deep uncertainty are still relatively un-examined. In this collaborative project we aim at developing a decision-support interface that allows us to scale the amount as well as control the type of information presented to decision makers. We will experimentally test different configurations of information to better understand how to improve decision-support interfaces but also what strategies are used by decision-makers when faced with problems with uncertainty.
